Occlusion blocks the sensor’s line of sight to the target, so the tracking system loses direct measurements of the target’s position and motion. Because tracking relies on a continuous stream of observations to update the target’s state, when occlusion occurs the system must rely on a prediction model to bridge the gap. The result is higher uncertainty in the target’s estimated position and velocity, and the risk of track drift or even temporary loss of the target identity.

To compensate, switch to other sensors that may still observe the target (for example, using radar, infrared/thermal, or other wavelengths), or move the sensor platform to regain line of sight. Sensor fusion helps bridge occlusions by combining information from multiple modalities, reducing reliance on any single sensor. When the target reappears, re-acquire it and update the state estimate to correct any drift. In practice, maintain robust data association and be prepared to adjust the tracking algorithm to handle gaps, ensuring a smooth re-link once visibility returns.

Occlusion does not improve tracking, and it certainly does affect sensor performance across modalities, not just night-vision gear.
